This RECAST activity helps students to realize the role of non-obvious decomposers in the recycling of matter. Many students do not realize that matter is recycled and those that do typically think that it falls apart on its own or depends upon worms and other obvious decomposers. Realizing the role of microbes and other non-obvious decomposers supports a cyclic causal model instead of a linear or accumulation model.
