When do you need a RECAST Activity?

RECAST activities help when the causal structure of students' explanations doesn't fit with the scientifically accepted ones. Usually students simplify and thus distort the concept, so for example, reducing instances of attraction, repelling, or symbiosis to one thing making another thing happen. However, not all misunderstandings result from the wrong causal structure. This section helps you think about when you need a RECAST activity and when you don't. It offers general examples as well as examples for ecosystems and density.
